1. Comment on the theme of Wallace Steven’s poem ‘The Emperor of Ice-Cream.’

In the poem, ice cream is used as a symbol for life. This symbol helps to illuminate the theme: We have to enjoy the here and now, so to speak, because life, like ice cream, will not last long. If one does not eat ice cream right away, it melts and becomes a lot less fun—or even impossible—to eat. If one does not make the most of one's life during the present, one might lose the opportunity to do so. Life will eventually come to an end, and it will likely be sooner than we think, so we must enjoy what we can while we can (we must, figuratively, eat the ice cream). Most things in life, things mentioned in the poem—"concupiscen[ce]" and youth and flowers and newspapers and ice cream—fade or melt or lose their relevance quickly, and the same can be said of life itself.

We cannot escape mortality

Likewise, the poem points to the idea that we cannot escape mortality. The dead woman in the second stanza embroidered birds, called "fantails," on her sheet once—birds are often associated with life and freedom and independence—but now she has "horny feet" that are calloused and cold. Her beautiful sheet is used to cover her face now. She is "dumb," mute, and can only offer a warning to seize the day with the existence of her body, cold and quiet.

Life is what makes one rich

Finally, the poem conveys the idea that life is what makes one rich. "The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream," the speaker says at the end of each stanza. In other words, the richest and most powerful person is the one who is alive, who eats the ice cream (figuratively and perhaps even literally). An emperor is someone who is powerful and wealthy, and the symbol of ice cream implies that the person who wields the most power and wealth in life is the one who IS alive. It is life and its enjoyment in the moment that makes us rich, not money or any other material goods.

Two lines in Stevens’s poem have often caused readers to wonder in puzzlement at what they might mean. The first is the title itself, “the emperor of ice-cream,” a phrase which is repeated in the last lines of both the first and second stanzas. Indeed, as part of the closing lines of each stanza, its importance is underscored and re-emphasized: In these lines, the emperor of ice-cream is in fact the only emperor. In order to understand this image and its symbolic aspects as fully as possible, one need also understand its corollary, the line which precedes it in the first stanza: “Let be be finale of seem.”

Emily Dickinson, in “I could not see to see,” the last line of her well-known poem “I heard a Fly buzz—when I died” (poem 465), makes a pun out of a simple verb. Since her eyes cannot see, she cannot understand. Just as Dickinson uses “see” on two quite different levels, the literal and the figurative, Stevens does here with “be.”

2. Discuss the narrative structure in Huckleberry Finn.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is written in the first-person point of view, which allows the reader to experience the story through Huck’s eyes and identify closely with the narrator. The story is told entirely from Huck’s perspective, and Huck refers to himself as “I” throughout the novel. Readers experience both external events and Huck’s internal thoughts and feelings from his vantage point. Even when Huck is being deceitful, as when he dresses as a girl and lies to the woman he meets in order to get information about his father, Huck’s actions remain sympathetic, because the reader knows his motivations. In one sense many of Huck’s actions are not that different from the king and the duke – all three tell stories to manipulate people – but because we know Huck’s motives are altruistic, his actions seem justified. We don’t see the story from the perspective of the king and duke, so we can only assume they are as selfish and greedy as their actions suggest. It is necessary for the reader to relate closely to Huck so that the moral stakes of his dilemma about helping Jim are high, and the reader is fully invested in Huck’s decision.

Huck can be an unreliable narrator, and his naïve misreading of situations creates dramatic irony, which contrasts Huck’s essentially good nature to the cynicism and hypocrisy of adults. Dramatic irony refers to situations where the reader knows more than a character in a book, and Twain employs it often in Huck Finn. Early on Huck fails to understand that the Widow Douglas prays before taking her meals: “When you got to the table you couldn’t go right to eating, but you had to wait for the widow to tuck down her head and grumble a little over the victuals, though there warn’t really anything the matter with them.” An extended example comes later when Huck goes to the circus. Because he is unaccustomed to the tropes of the performance, he is amazed that the clown has such witty comebacks and that the apparently drunk man in the audience turns out to be a performer: “then the ringmaster he see how he had been fooled,” he says, not guessing the ringmaster is in on the deception as well. These instances develop Huck’s character as innocent and uncorrupted, in opposition to the manipulative and jaded characters he meets with Jim.

First-person narration is used throughout The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which is continued on by the protagonist Huck Finn. This gives the work the feel of an autobiography, with Huck narrating his individual and social identity throughout the novel. The narrative becomes more serious and believable owing to the unavailability of commentary. Mark Twain was able to easily portray the most heinous facts of modern social life because he used first-person narrative in his writing. As the remarks of an adult writer, how it could have been considered offensive to the general public becomes readily tolerable via the lips of a sensitive little kid. It starts in the manner of Tom Sawyer, with Huckleberry Finn presenting himself as the narrator and reminiscing about events from the preceding book. Nevertheless, Tom is eliminated from the story in chapter 3, and with him, the romantic aspect in the shape of his effort to organise a gang of thieves is also lost from the story. With the introduction of Pap Finn, Huck’s alcoholic father, the story takes a dramatic turn in chapter 4. Huck, who can’t tolerate the Widow Douglas and her sister Miss Watson’s efforts to civilise him, can’t stand the unsettling presence of his father even more. He flees to Jackson’s Island after faking his own death in the cottage where his father had imprisoned him. When Miss Watson’s slave Jim finds out about Miss Watson’s intention to sell him across the river for 800 dollars, he flees to the Island as well. Huck and Jim reunite on the island, and Huck swears Jim that he would never betray him again.
